Alumni Profile: Jon Dooley
2003 Young Alumni Award Recipient

Jon Dooley pursued a career in higher education and student affairs, combining his academic and out-of-class experiences as a student at St. Norbert.  He graduated with a double major in history and social studies, completing certification to serve as middle or high school teacher.  Jon was also involved in student life at SNC as president of the College Activities Board, president of TNT, and resident assistant.  It was those experiences that drew him to graduate school after college and he subsequently earned a master’s degree from James Madison University in Counseling Psychology (College Student Personnel Administration).

After three years as a program advisor with the Illini Union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Jon joined the Office of Student Development at Marquette University.  Since 1998 he has worked at Marquette with a variety of different student learning experiences, including leadership programs, Greek life, student organizations, late night programming, student government, student conduct, and student activities.  He currently serves as the Associate Dean of Student Development and has an adjunct appointment, teaching graduate students in the College Student Personnel master’s program.

Jon’s experiences at St. Norbert also sparked a commitment to social justice, starting particularly with an immersion experience his freshman year to Catholic schools serving inner-city Chicago and continuing with courses from excellent education and sociology faculty like Robert Rutter, Jim Benton, and Cheryl Carpenter.  In 2007 Jon completed his doctorate in educational policy and leadership at Marquette, focusing his dissertation research on the impact of service-learning on student attitudes toward race and social justice.

Experiences attending leadership conferences while a student at St. Norbert also led to active involvement in professional associations throughout Jon’s career.  He has presented numerous presentations and regional and national conferences and recently completed a term as chair of the board of directors for the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA).

Jon currently serves on the St. Norbert Alumni Board and was the recipient of the Young Alumni Award in 2003.  He lives in Milwaukee with his wife Stacie and children Emma and Jack.
