Position Area(s):
Program Director
Major/Minor(s):
International Studies
Alumni Profile: David Schug

David Schug graduated from St. Norbert College in 1996. As an International Studies major, David had always hoped to eventually assist students in engaging in an overseas education.

At St. Norbert, he attempted to involve himself in all things international—David worked with the study abroad office, the international students program, the English as a Second Language program and even dabbled in a joint international trade research collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Commerce. These experiences, along with a semester of study abroad at Sophia University in Japan and the general liberal arts background emphasized by SNC, prepared him for his current career. For further preparation, he gained a Master's degree in international affairs at the George Washington University.

David is currently the director of the National and International Scholarships Program at the University of Illinois. There, he assists the best Illinois students and alumni in obtaining nationally competitive scholarships. The majority of his time is spent working with students preparing to apply for overseas graduate scholarships such as the Rhodes, Marshall and Fulbright. David also works with students in obtaining scholarships for their undergraduate study abroad experiences.

His favorite part of the job is really getting to know students and their career/personal aspirations. Plus, he never knows what subject he'll be learning about from the student who walks into his office—be it the engineer, ancient historian, mathematician, geologist or political scientist.
