Requirements for Hiring a St. Norbert College Intern
St. Norbert College Internship Registration Options: Students following any of the below options are required to complete an internship learning agreement, an end-of-term evaluation, and an on-site visit upon request. The intern's supervisor is expected to support the agreed-upon goals on the internship learning agreement, to submit an end-of-term evaluation, and to host a site visit if requested.
Internship Registration Options: 1. Academic Credit Internship Courses: The student's internship must be approved by the course professor. Once approved, the student must register and pay for 4 academic credits. Credits do not constitute an employer’s compensation for internship work done in the workplace. Credits are earned for the successful completion of academic work assigned by the student’s professor for the course and are not to be equated with the actual work experience. Students are required to work a minimum of 120 hours at the internship site during the length of the course. The requirements for interns receiving academic credit differs slightly from the below bulleted process and the course instructor should be contacted for specific details.
2. 0-Credit (Non-credit) Internship: This option allows a 0-Credit internship to be listed on the student’s academic transcript without a tuition charge. Students are required to work a minimum of 60 hours at the internship site. This option allows non-credit internship experiences to be officially recognized by the College. Non-credit internships are very common at St. Norbert College and the College still recognizes, monitors, and supervises these internships if the following process is followed.
Must an Internship Be Paid? You are strongly encouraged to offer compensation. To ensure that an experience-whether it is a traditional internship or one conducted remotely or virtually-is educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship by the NACE definition, all the following criteria must be met: 1. The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform. 2.The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings. 3. The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications. 4. There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student's academic coursework. 5. There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience. 6. There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor. 7. There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.
All position descriptions for unpaid internships submitted to St. Norbert College must clearly indicate that the above criteria are met.
Unpaid student employment will not violate the Fair Labor Standards Act if it is a training program which meets the following criteria: 1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment; 2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern; 3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff; 4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded; 5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and 6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
The average hourly wage for a St. Norbert internship student in 2010-2011 was $9.18/hour.
