Career Topic of the Month: Job Fairs

Now that second semester is in full swing and many students are anticipating walking across that big stage in May, it is time to start preparing, if you haven't already, to search for a job.  This also applies to any non-seniors interested in either a job or potentially an internship.

With February brings many opportunities through Career Services to get your foot in the door, start networking, and handing out your resume.  Listed on the bottom of this newsletter, you will find some great upcoming events.  The reason job fairs are so efficient is because of the amount of employers in one spot; they are coming to YOU!  All you have to do is dress for success, bring your application materials, prepare your 60 second commercial, and practice your firm handshake.

Career Resource of the Month:How to Prepare for a Job Fair

  • If you don't already have one, write your resume and cover letter.  Tip: DON'T use a template, DO start from scratch.
  • Bring your resume and cover letter into Career Services to be critiqued.  Check out the times for our walk-in hours
  • Look online for a list of career fairs to see which employers will be attending the fairs.  This way, you can seek out any specific employers you would like and can tailor your resumes and cover letters.
  • Remember: If you don't have a specific employer in mind, it's okay to bring a general resume.
  • Dress for success! Always remember to look professional: wear a suit, maintain hair and nails, no excessive piercings, no cologne or perfume, use common sense!
  • First impressions are everything: Remember to have questions for the employer, remain positive, maintain eye contact, and smile, smile, smile!

Career Tip of the Month: What Not to Wear

When talking about job searching, you hear a lot about first impressions.  Let's face it: we all make them, and so will employers.  If they are going to be hiring someone they will be working with for 40 hours a week, they want to be sure they are a good fit for the company not strictly by their skills, but by their professionalism as well.  What you wear to your interview, a job fair, and so forth is a big indicator to the employer of your personality and professionalism.  Are your pants wrinkled?  Do piercings cover your face?  Is there a run in your nylons?  Are you wearing a sports-themed tie?  All of the above are red flags to the employer.  You want to be remembered by what you say, not by what you wear.  Check out this article on what NOT to wear during an interview.  On the flip side, you can find some extremely helpful tips here:  http://www.snc.edu/career/docs/dress.pdf.  Happy shopping!

Financial Literacy Tip of the Month: Assessing Job Offers

Salaries are important, but they don't give the whole picture. In an expensive city, your salary won't go as far. It's therefore important to know the cost of living in the city where you'll work. Say you earn a salary of $30,000. This $30,000 will go farther in some cities than in others. This is because basic living expenses are higher in some cities than in others.

You can compare how far your salary will go by using a cost of living calculator. Cost of living calculators compare how far your salary will go in different cities. Plug in your salary and the names of the cities. The calculator will tell you which city is most expensive!

Say you've received two job offers. Both pay a starting salary of $30,000. One is in Boise, Idaho. The other is in Washington, DC. Which salary is worth more?  A salary of $30,000 would buy you more in Boise, Idaho, than it would in Washington, D.C. Housing, food, and transportation all cost more in Washington, D.C. So, your salary would be worth more in Boise than it would in Washington, D.C. If you lived in Boise, your living costs would be about two-thirds of what they would be in Washington, D.C.
