Career Topic of the Month: Christmas Break!

Christmas break is quickly approaching and you may be planning or looking forward to all sorts of fun winter activities. Some of you may even be looking forward to some simple down time after exams when you don't have to think about school. With all the time that you will soon have available, you may be thinking about getting a job to make a little extra money over Christmas break. Whether you need money to partake in all the activities you have planned or you want to save it for next semester when you won't be working, getting a job over Christmas break is a good idea for students.

Career Resource of the Month: Finding a Job for Christmas Break

If you’re thinking about looking for a Christmas break job, don’t wait too long. Many places take on extra employees during the holidays to make up for the increase in customers and demand for services. These places expect to take on many students due to their Christmas break and can be flexible with start and end dates. Listed below are a few ideas of where to start looking, but don’t stop there. Get creative in looking for ways to make extra money over break!
  • Grocery stores
  • Waiting tables
  • Bartending
  • Retail stores such as Target, Macy’s, Younkers, Kohl’s
  • Babysit
  • Tutor
  • Register with a temp agency
  • Make creative crafts for the season and sell them
  • Ask friends, neighbors, or family members if they know of anyone needing extra help over the holidays. Remember it’s all about who you know!

Career Tip of the Month: Start Looking for Christmas Break Jobs NOW!

Don’t wait too long to start finding a job for Christmas break. You will want to start now, in the beginning of November, because this is when employers are looking for extra help for the holidays. Employers want to know by mid-November that they have all of their holiday shifts covered. You will also feel more confident going into Christmas break knowing that you will have extra cash in your pockets in case you need it!

Financial Literacy Tip of the Month: Holiday Overspending

Whenever we spend more than our income, we are overspending. For some of us, overspending can be almost unconscious—you buy that latte and new sweatshirt and then go out to dinner without adding up the costs in your head, much less on paper. We're not even aware of the hole we've dug ourselves into until it's too late. But in order to meet our financial goals, we need to live within our means.

The holidays especially can be a time when people pull out their credit cards to make ends meet. Click here for five common reasons people overspend—if you recognize any of these, see if you can weed that behavior out of your financial life and save a buck or two.

Internship of the Month: Community Relations Intern

Why intern? Internships are a great opportunity to apply classroom theory to real life work and to acquire experience to make yourself more marketable for future employment. It can also be one way to "test" your chosen career area to determine if it is a good fit for you.

American Cancer Society, Community Relations Intern, Green Bay, WI

  • Position Description: The American Cancer Society is looking for an energetic, motivated intern to assist us in our fight against cancer! This rewarding internship role will be responsible for assisting our Community Relations team in carrying out comprehensive and diverse community presence portfolio of community health and fund-raising activities.

    We are looking for an intern with exceptional organization, communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills to help us with:
    • Event logistics
    • Working with volunteers
    • Materials distribution
    • Entertainment and supply procurement
    • Database maintenance
    • Special Projects
    • Secure in-kind donations

    This intern will be a crucial member of the Community Relations team and will gain thorough knowledge of the American Cancer Society’s efforts in volunteer involvement and community relations.
  • Qualifications
    • Interns must be full-time undergraduate or graduate college students in good academic standing. Students must have completed their freshman year and have declared a major. Candidates must earn at least a "C+" cumulative average (2.50+ on 4.00 scale) and maintain at least a "C+" cumulative average each year in order to continue in the program.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
    • Strong customer service skills
    • Verbal and written communication skills
    • Organizational Skills
    • Initiative and ability to work independently
