Career Topic of the Month: Internships

What is an Internship?
An internship refers to any temporary work experience, in a for-profit or non-profit setting, with the dual purpose of learning while working. Internships can be integrated with the student’s regular schedule or take place during school breaks.

Benefits of an Internship

Internships allow students to:

  • Apply classroom knowledge to a real work environment
  • Acquire experience important for future employment and education
  • Develop and practice transferable skills
  • Experience different management styles and work environments
  • Expand their professional network and references
  • Increase their chances of receiving a job offer upon graduation

Before Beginning an Internship, Determine your Internship Goals

  • What are your specific career interests? What type of organization interests you?
  • Will you consider both paid and unpaid internships?
  • Do you want college credit?
  • Do you have geographical limitations?
  • What do you hope to learn from your internship?

Where to Find an Internship

Getting the Most Out of Your Internship
  • Meet regularly with your supervisor(s). Do not be afraid to ask questions, but also be a good listener and learn as much as you can during these meetings. Discuss problems as they arise.
  • Express a positive attitude and a desire to learn. Complete your work assignments with enthusiasm and professionalism.
  • Exhibit initiative and suggest creative solutions to some of the challenges at your work site.
  • Set personal goals which are realistic and attainable.
  • Network—build professional relationships with your supervisor and other people in the organization.
  • Leave with tangible results to add to your resume and/or portfolio.
