Career Topic of the Month: Time Management

College life is fast paced and always full of things to do. Go to class, study, work, be involved with extra-curricular activities which could be any of the following: athletics, Greek life, leadership, community service, tutoring, and the list could go on. So how do you keep it all together?  There are only 24 hours in a day and at least 7 to 8 of those hours are spent sleeping and that leaves only 16 hours to go to class, eat, study, talk with friends, or go to work. Many of the 16 hours throughout the week are probably spent in the classroom. Most students have 4 classes which means at least 12 to 16 hours a week spent in the classroom. Time management is the answer. What is it you ask? Time management is an attribute to college and life which some may say does not work for them but in reality can work for everyone.

Time management is necessary for many students who are heavily involved on campus in order to have fun and still do well academically. But how time management works can differ from person to person. Some students write lists to help with reminding them what to do. These lists are best used when they are prioritized by what is critical to be done today, what is important, and what is possible. This way you are not overwhelmed with the number of items which may be on your list. From the beginning you know that the critical items must be done and if you can make it to the possible items – great but if not, then they can be done another day without any worries.

Another method of time management is planning your day out by scheduling time to take care of homework, papers, exam studying, laundry, exercising, work, etc. For some individuals it is essential to schedule certain things into their day otherwise they know it will not be accomplished. Other important time management tips include learning to say no and learning to use small amounts of time wisely. Thirty minutes between classes may not seem like a lot of time but you can accomplish a lot during that small window of time.  The same strategy can be applied while waiting for an appointment or waiting for a friend to call - use the time you are waiting to read that chapter, start the introduction to the paper, or make flash cards for the upcoming exam. Developing the method to productively use time, even in small increments, will help you during and after college.

You will find that the time management skills you develop and improve on in college will only help you in life after SNC because life will probably not slow down or become less busy. Having already established your own method of time management will help in completing that project for your new job or helping with the job search. It will also help if having a family is a goal of yours because it is very important to know how to manage your time well when you are not the only one in the picture anymore.

Try to implement some of these time management strategies in preparing for the upcoming final exams!  You may find yourself with not only more time available, but also feel better prepared for your tests.

Career Resource of the Month: Leadership Development, Service and Engagement

Ever wonder what to do with some of the extra time you may have or do you accomplish more when you are busy? The Leadership Development, Service & Engagement office, or LSE for short, is the place to start in finding something to do. LSE is the place to go to find a student activity which fits your personality and interests, become a student leader, or have a question about the campus center – they manage it, as well as bring in entertainers, films, and speakers. In addition, there are many specialty programs within LSE such as the TRIPS program, Emerging Leaders, M3C program, or become involved as a First Year Experience for summer and fall orientation.

Financial Literacy Tip of the Month: Keeping your Personal Information Protected
This time of year many of us are shopping for family and friends so personal and financial information is being transferred from you to check out person to wallet. Who is that person behind you? Here are some tips to be aware of despite the time of year to protect your personal and financial information.

  1. Do not give your Social Security, credit card or bank accounts to anyone unless you know why they are using them. This is especially important over e-mail.
  2. Make sure you shred any important papers with personal information such as account number, credit card information, name or address before throwing away. This also includes unused credit card offers.
  3. Keep your security software up to date. Do not send any credit card information over the Web unless you know for sure the site is secure and your computer is protected by an anti-virus or other security software.
  4. Keep all receipts, especially credit card and ATM, in a safe place until you have paid the bill or balanced your checkbook. Then shred or tear them up.
  5. Always check your credit card statements for unauthorized use. Call the credit card immediately if you suspect fraud so you can cancel the account.
