Career Connections Newsletter • September 2009 Career Topic of the Month: New Beginnings Career Topic of the Month: New Beginnings ~ Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. ~ ~ The secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings. ~ ~ All glory comes from daring to begin. ~ ~ What appears to be the end may really be a new beginning. ~ New beginnings can happen every day. Starting college as a freshmen right through your senior year job search you will encounter a multitude of new beginnings. In starting this new school year, maybe some of you feel nervous, excited, apprehensive, or even hopeful. New beginnings can be accompanied by any type of emotion. In order to make the most of a new beginning try to keep a positive mindset and use all the resources available to you. Career Resource of the Month: 15 Tips on Conquering your Freshmen Fears Even though this article has "freshmen" in the title, the tips provided here can be useful for any student, no matter the year. Even though students' concerns can vary year to year, college students may experience similar general fears, such as having awful roommates or being concerned about finances. Check out this list of fears and then get tips on conquering them: 1. The admissions office let me in by accident. 2. My roommate will be awful. 3. I don't know anyone there, and I'll have problems meeting new people and making friends. 4. I won't be able to cut it academically. 5. I'm really going to be homesick for my friends/family/boyfriend/girlfriend back home. 6. I'm concerned about my finances. 7. I don't know how I'll balance so many things. 8. I'm nervous about being on my own for the first time. 9. I don't know how to do basic things, like doing my own laundry or cooking for myself. 10. My health is really important to me, and I'm worried about gaining weight and the "freshman fifteen." 11. I'm intimidated by professors but know I may need to go to them for help. 12. I'm worried about being disconnected from my religious life, practice, and community. 13. I'm worried about my safety now that I'm on my own. 14. I don't think I can handle all of the stress. 15. A few things to think about would be what positions you are interested in, where you want to live, the size of a particular company that best suites you, and the overall environment of a company. Knowing the particulars of what you're looking for in a career will help to ensure you find one that is best suitable for you! Begin your senior year with your career in mind. Financial Literacy Tip of the Month: Eating Healthy on a Budget Incorporating healthier eating habits is a new beginning, but fruits and vegetables are expensive especially on a student budget.
