Career Topic of the Month: Tying Up Loose Ends

If you’re a graduating senior or even if you’re looking for a seasonal part-time job, you may feel like the economy has doomed you to fail. This is NOT true! Using the tough economy as an excuse is just that, an excuse. Yes, getting a job in these tough economic times is more difficult, BUT not impossible. Success is possible but it’s important to be on top of your game and have all of your loose ends tied up before you begin to apply for jobs. This means many things:

  • Getting your resume and cover letter critiqued so they are error-free.
  • Practicing your interviewing techniques or participating in a mock interview to make sure that you are speaking effectively about your skills and experiences.
  • Preparing to NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK with everyone you know. Know how to talk about yourself and what to ask others.
  • Gathering information about people who could possibly serve as references for you and provide them with all of your job hunting information (i.e. resume, cover letter, job description, etc.).
  • Purchasing an affordable suit (that is appropriate for your field) to wear to every interview.
  • Changing all of your outgoing voicemails and names in your emails to something professional-sounding.

These are just a few things you should consider doing in order to increase your chances of getting a job. However, you’ll want to go above and beyond to really set yourself apart. Let us help you do just that! Stop in or call Career Services (920) 403-3040 in order to make an appointment with Jerry or Mandy.

Financial Literacy Tip of the Month: Planning a Trip Over Break?

You may need a break from all the hard work you've put into preparing and job hunting.  However, if you would like to go on a trip over Christmas or spring break during college, you need to plan for it. Figure out whether you can realistically afford a trip, and then make a plan for achieving your goal.

Find out what the trip will realistically cost for transportation (airfare, train, gas), lodging, meals, entertainment, and other expenses, such as ski lift tickets.

Calculate if you have enough money. If not, can you cut expenses and save what you need between now and spring break? If you're unsure, try writing down everything you spend money on right now and identifying whether each one is a need or a want. Refer to Identifying needs vs. wants to help you with this process.
