Class Registration for Academic Credit Internships
- During the advising period, the student must obtain permission to receive credit from the faculty supervisor AND notify the Assistant Director of Career Services - Internships of their plans.
- Registration for the Internship Seminar 494 course will be done via KnightLine.
- If the Internship Seminar 494 is not available on KnightLine, students have the option of obtaining credit through an individualized internship with a sponsoring faculty supervisor. It is the student’s responsibility to find a faculty member who is willing to individually supervise them. The faculty supervisor, the student’s academic advisor, and the Divisional Associate Dean must sign a Special Course Registration Form, which is available through the Registrar’s Office. The Internship 494 option on the form must be checked.
- The nature of the internship experience (i.e. the job responsibilities), primarily determines which internship course the student registers for. A student with an internship experience within their major would register for that discipline’s internship course (i.e. an art major with a graphic design internship would register for ART 494). However, when the internship experience is outside of that student’s major the student would register for HUMA 494, NSCI 494, or SSCI 494 based on the nature of the experience (i.e. a music major with a business internship would register for SSCI 494).
- Students and advisors should check the College Catalog to determine whether an Internship Course will count as an elective towards the student’s major. If not listed as a major elective in the College Catalog, the Internship Course can only be applied to major requirements through the Course Substitution process, available through the Registrar’s Office.
- Normal tuition policies apply to internships taken for credit.
Prerequisites For Receiving Credit For An Internship:
- Students are required to work a minimum of 120 hours at the internship site during the length of the course. More hours may be required depending on the specific course.
- Students can only take each Internship Course once (including those that are cross-referenced), with a maximum of 8 internship credits taken.
- The student is of junior or senior standing, but an exception to this prerequisite can be made if approved by the Divisional Associate Dean.
- Students must have a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA to be eligible to register for a credit-bearing internship. Students with a lower than 2.50 cumulative GPA must obtain approval to register for an Internship Seminar by the faculty supervisor.
- Students must be interning during the semester they are taking the Internship Course (i.e. the internship must be taken simultaneous with the course). An exception can be made if approved by the Division Associate Dean.
- Students can receive credit for their internship regardless of whether it is paid or unpaid.
- Students are not allowed to receive credit if they are interning with a family business, or have a relative as their direct supervisor.
