St. Norbert College Internship Program - An Overview
For resources on finding an internship and for additional information, please review Frequently Asked Questions.
An internship refers to a monitored temporary work experience, in a for-profit or non-profit setting, with the dual purpose of learning while working. Internships allow students to gain hands-on experience while developing career-specific skills. An intern has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience. Learning goals can include: academic learning, career development, skill development, and personal development. Sponsoring agencies work with the student to meet their specific learning goals, while also providing supervision and networking opportunities. In exchange, the intern helps the employer meet overall work goals.
St. Norbert College internships are planned in cooperation with the College, the company/business where the internship will take place, and the student. An internship learning agreement (see below) serves as the contract between these three parties. Internships may be paid or unpaid, with or without academic credit, and are of varying lengths (a semester, a summer, a year, etc.).
SNC Career Services offers students, faculty, and intern supervisors support regarding both credit and non-credit internships. Below are the St. Norbert College Internship Program Requirements.
Noncredit Internship Registration Requirements – On or Off Campus:
1. Internship Learning Agreement
Complete an Internship Learning Agreement for EACH summer and academic year you intern, even if your site remains the same, and turn it into the Career Services Office within ONE WEEK of your start date. Career Services contact information can be found on the form.
Your site supervisor will need to sign the contract and both parties should retain a copy. It may be helpful to review Learning Agreement Tips and a Sample. The learning agreement (and thus the internship) needs to be approved and signed by Jenny Schroth, Assistant Director of Internships at SNC. If the internship is on-campus, the Career Services Office will make a copy of the learning agreement for the Financial Aid Office so they are aware of your internship status.
2. Site Visits
Site visits will be conducted by Jenny Schroth, Assistant Director of Internships, midway through the semester/summer with as many student interns and supervisors as can be managed. During the site visit, learning goals and the internship experience will be discussed. Students and supervisors should contact Jenny Schroth, with any concerns or to request a site visit.
3. Internship Evaluations
To gather feedback regarding the internship experience, online evaluations will be dispersed to all student interns and supervisors at the end of EACH semester and summer via the emails listed on the learning agreement. Evaluations are due one week prior to the end of EACH school term, or one week prior to the end of the internship, whichever comes first. You are strongly encouraged to discuss both evaluations with your supervisor , which can serve as an excellent reflection and learning opportunity. Both the student and supervisor should retain a copy of each of the evaluations. Click here to access the student evaluation.
4. Internship Certificate & Internship Profile Upon completion of your internship, please contact Jenny Schroth, Assistant Director of Internships, if you wish to receive an internship certificate to use in your professional portfolio.
You may consider creating an Internship Profile as a way to market yourself to potential employers while creating a positive presence online. Internship Profiles may also aid current SNC students in their career exploration.
Academic Credit Internship Registration Requirements – On or Off Campus:
1. Class Registration
To receive credit for your internship you will need to register for a 494 Internship Course or 490 Independent Study Course. Registration is by instructor permission only, so you will need to contact the instructor prior to registering.
2. Internship Learning Agreement
Complete an Internship Learning Agreement, which may differ depending on the discipline; therefore, consult with your class instructor. Learning Agreements are to be signed by the student, site supervisor, and class instructor. A copy of your Learning Agreement should be given to the Career Services Office so the College can keep accurate record of all internships completed.
3. Site Visits
Class Instructors will complete site visits at their discretion.
4. Internship Evaluations
Class Instructors will disperse end of semester evaluations to gather feedback regarding the internship experience. These evaluations may differ between disciplines.
5. Internship Profile
Upon completion of your internship, you may consider creating an Internship Profile as a way to market yourself to potential employers while creating a positive online presence. Internship Profiles may also aid current SNC students in their career exploration.
