Getting Started

Finding an Internship

  • Career Services Library (there are several books in the Career Services Library listing internship offerings nationally, internationally, and for all majors)
  • St. Norbert College faculty and staff
  • Company Web Sites - If you know of a company you would like to intern at, search their web site for postings.
  • Network with everyone you know.  Let friends, family, neighbors, professors, former employers, etc. know what kind of internship you are searching for.  Ask for referrals and request informational interviews.  Networking is an ideal way for finding those internship and job opportunities that are not posted.  Within Career Connections, there is access to Career Contacts, professionals who are willing to network with St. Norbert College students.
  • Join an online professional networking site, such as LinkedIn. A LinkedIn account is a great way to create a professional brand online and to discover inside connections when you're looking for an internship.

Steps to Preparing for an Internship

  1. Determine your internship goals.  Consider the following:
    • What are your specific career interests/goals?
    • What types of organizations interest you?
    • Will you consider both paid and unpaid internships?
    • Do you want college credit?
    • Do you have geographical limitations?
    • What do you hope to learn from your internship?
    • What is your class schedule?
    • How many hours do you want to commit to an internship?
  2. Conduct informational interviews with companies that interest you
  3. Prepare a tailored resume and cover letter for every position you apply to and have it critiqued by a career counselor
  4. Create a reference page
  5. Prepare for interviews. Learn about behavioral based interviewing, create your 60 second commercial, prepare questions to ask, and
conduct a mock interview with a career counselor.
  6. Follow up.  Stay in contact with employers to determine the status of your application.  Always send a thank you within 24-48 hours of an interview.
