Intern Profile: Stephanie Birmingham

While participating in the Washington Semester program in Washington, D.C. I had the opportunity be involved with an internship. I was uncertain about where to intern, but the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights caught my attention at an “internship-fair” sponsored by the Washington Semester program. My choice of internship has proven to be a very valuable experience.

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) is a non-profit advocacy organization. Comprised of over 100 different groups, the LCCR coalition organization deals with a wide range of civil rights issues, including voting rights, disability rights, civil rights enforcement, criminal justice and education.

My internship responsibilities included updating their main webpage, writing articles for their website – civilrights.org, keeping track of legislation and the voting records of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Also, as an intern I was responsible for conducting research in grant databases and attending congressional hearings and briefings on Capitol Hill. An example of the grassroots planning I was able to experience while at LCCR was when the other interns and I put together an educational program about D.C. voting rights. Students and other interns from the area attended a brownbag luncheon where we led discussions regarding the issue of D.C. voting rights. Following the event, the entire staff at LCCR and the interns participated in the D.C. voting rights march as an outward expression of true activism.

Through my internship with LCCR, I have learned many valuable skills. My writing abilities have been further developed and I have been able to learn what it takes to work in a professional environment. My self-confidence and ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibility has greatly improved. Because of my experience at the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, I feel that I am more prepared to enter the working world after my time at St. Norbert.
