Intern Profile: Cullen Braun

Beginning in the summer of 2008, I was hired as an engineering intern for Franklin Energy Services, a company who specializes in the implementation of energy efficiency programs.  I met individuals from Franklin Energy at the Marquette University Job Fair and began working with the statewide energy-efficiency program, Wisconsin Focus on Energy. This internship provided numerous avenues to expand my knowledge of physical systems (HVAC, compressed air, lighting etc.), and improve communication skills by meeting with numerous presidents and plant managers of Wisconsin industrial and commercial businesses.  The most exciting aspect of the position was accompanying Energy Advisors on energy audits.  On these energy audits, the Energy Advisors and I met with plant presidents and managers and conducted walkthrough’s of their manufacturing facilities, noting areas of potential improved energy efficiency and cost savings.  After the walkthrough, I performed calculations on the energy saving measures and created a several page report quantifying and explaining the possible energy efficient measures the company could pursue.

I also was responsible for managing the ENERGY STAR® benchmarking tool for numerous hospitals and 20+ buildings for a specific client.  The management of this tool required creating the accounts, acquiring all pertinent information, data entering, generating reports, and presenting the reports to utility account executives, energy advisors, and plant managers at monthly meetings.  In addition, I conducted customer training of this program and created user manuals and applications to ease the account creation and transfer process.

I encourage Physics and Mathematics students to consider an engineering internship.  Though, St. Norbert does not offer an engineering degree, the opportunities are available to obtain an internship in an engineering field and gain the “real world” perspective of industrial applications.
