Intern Profile: Teddy Fleming

My official title was a Behavior Management Specialist.  I worked with troubled juvenile clients, assisting with the implementation of Behavioral, Mental Health and/or Emotional Containment treatment approaches.  These approaches are intended to assist the client in learning, growing, and changing by experiencing responsibility, self-control, and self-confidence.  This is what the realm of social service calls a ‘front line’ position.  I was with the kids in every aspect of their daily programming, making sure that they stayed dedicated to their individual treatment plans.

This internship was definitely an eye-opener.  It was a great learning experience because it has given me an idea of the issues children are facing and how serious some of the problems are, while teaching me many different ways to approach the issues.  I have always believed that one can never truly understand a situation until they have experienced it and this internship has given me great experience to bring with me to my next professional work environment.

My only advice to students interested in pursuing an internship would be to not say “no” to anything.  Keep an open mind and open arms wherever you go because if you don’t, you will miss out on so many wonderful opportunities to really help someone!

Please Note:  Any student considering an internship in the Human Services field should contact Kim Kaczmarowski, Instructor and Director of Human Services at SNC.
