Intern Profile: Ashley Garvey
As many college students may know, there is only so much you can learn in the classroom. You might not obtain all the skills necessary to help you once you graduate. This is why I chose to look for an internship with the help of St. Norbert College Career Services. At first it was a little overwhelming discovering the effort that goes into finding an internship that is a good fit, but I’ve found that the effort was well worth it. You never know unless you try!
My internship was held at Sovereign City Communications in Allouez this summer, working with the nationally syndicated Wendy Templeton radio show called “In Your Oasis.” The show can be heard from 7-12 p.m. on 104.3 The Breeze in Green Bay. As the first intern at Sovereign City, I was somewhat of a “guinea pig” and got to experience a variety of things. I helped with show preparation and sat in on many meetings. In these meetings, Wendy and her producer make the necessary changes to make the show run smoothly. I also learned how to edit Wendy’s shows. The term they use for this is called “skimming” where I pulled out Wendy’s voice tracks from one of her shows and saved them using a program called Adobe Audition. If you know how to use Microsoft Word, then Adobe Audition is a piece of cake!
The most valuable skill I acquired as an intern was learning how to run the board for Wendy’s show. That basically means I got to push all the buttons. This was intimidating at first, but once I got going, it was fun. It was also a challenge because there’s timing involved and I needed to always be thinking ahead, and of course not push the wrong button! At the end of my internship I got the opportunity to run the entire show! Not many students can say that they ran the board for a national radio show! That’s something to be proud of!
As an intern you can learn so much more than you can in a classroom. What I’ve learned from my experience is not to be afraid to make mistakes and to not be so hard on yourself when you do. Getting an internship was the best thing that I could have done for myself not only professionally, but personally as well. It’s a growing experience. You would be making a huge mistake if you go through your four years of college without the internship experience. It’s definitely made an impact on my experience here at St. Norbert College, and I’m sure it can do the same for someone else!
