During my internship at Voyageur Magazine I worked as an
editorial assistant. This job was far more than correcting grammatical errors
within an article though. The other
editorial assistants and I worked with a graphic designer and found images for
them as well as wrote the captions for said pictures and even created the title
for the articles we worked on. However, we did not work solely on one article.
If another article needed assistance during our office hours we would find
images for that article as well or sometimes we would even write the small
"sidebar" stories that were related to the main articles.
I really enjoyed my experience for it gave me tools to not
only work as an editor, but also as a writer for commercial print and a taste
of the graphic design world. I would
have loved to receive pay for my job, but I would not trade this rewarding
internship for one where I would learn less just for a dollar amount. Unpaid
internships may seem rough, and they are. However, try to remember that in the
end you gain a lot of new skills and networking.
