Intern Profile: Aaron Hammen

In my internship with PMI (an event promotion and marketing company for entertainment venues including the Resch Center), I assisted the VP of Marketing, Marketing Managers, and Public Relations Manager in the research and execution of event marketing plans.  Responsibilities have included internet research, radio trades, direct mail coordination, and other administrative duties.  This internship has allowed me to gain invaluable hands-on experience in the marketing field and has given me the opportunity to apply course work to real-life situations.   This includes the skills acquired while studying and living abroad in the previous semester.

I have experienced the process of advertising events, such as Milwaukee Bucks games, from start to finish.   As a result, I have gained confidence in many of the core skill areas necessary to be successful in the marketing arena.   These include the ability to effectively work with a team and successfully utilize written and verbal communication skills.

Being involved with marketing and promoting events, beginning with the first stage, has also prepared me for work in an advertising agency position.   The insights that I have gained about the overall marketing process will help greatly in my ability to not only get a job after graduation, but to also be successful in that job.   Most importantly, many professional contacts have been gained, as relationships with key influential individuals, such as the VP of Marketing at PMI, have positively developed.  Although my internship was initially unpaid, it has recently developed into a paid position.  This is in part to my hard work, commitment, and contributions to PMI.

I would encourage current SNC students to utilize the resources available through Career Services, and overall at St. Norbert College, when attempting to find an internship.   My internship at PMI was gained simply by showing up at an SNC Job Fair and asking the employers present whether or not a marketing position was available.   Do not be afraid to simply pick a company you are interested in and e-mail them, which shows your initiative and strong desire to continue your education through an internship.   Also, do not be deterred by a position that is unpaid, as the experience and strong networking opportunity far outweighs the wage you may earn.  Overall, use the resources available at SNC, be persistent, and do not be afraid to call or e-mail a company with your intent.
