Intern Profile: Angela Schneider

I began searching for an internship following my sophomore year at SNC.  I was drawn to the YMCA because of their mission “To put Christian Principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.”  The values the organization shares with their members are easily transferred to their work environment.  The Human Resource Department of the Greater Green Bay YMCA oversees a staff of more than 1,100 employees.  As the intern I played an important role in the day-to-day operations of the department and had the opportunity to work with great mentors that took a genuine interest in my personal and professional development.

During my first few weeks I was given short term projects and received extensive training.  I was encouraged to ask questions and quickly developed my ability to ask the right questions to gather necessary information efficiently.  Within these first weeks I was given the task of analyzing all of our applicant flow.  A huge amount of trust was placed in my abilities as my supervisor helped me to develop and explore my analytical and written communication skills.

As I became more comfortable in my role, I was able to work much more independently, tracking and completing new hire paperwork, reviewing quarterly employee performance appraisals, processing all summer camp staff background information, and additional short-term projects as needed. I also attended two career fairs, recruiting for the YMCA.  I have been able to network as a professional for the YMCA and as a college student, making connections for future employment.

The most noteworthy aspect of this internship was the personal time each of the staff members dedicated to my learning experience.  I worked with the Human Resource/Training Assistant on a daily basis, developing knowledge of YMCA policies and procedures, and guidance on my assignments.  The Director of Human Resources made every effort to meet regularly to discuss my performance, issues at the YMCA, and general HR topics.  The mentorship I received helped me to recognize how my internship experience can connect what I’ve been learning in the classroom to the "real" world.

I cannot say enough about the benefits of interning in a Human Resource Department.  The realities of the role of human resources in an organization complement what I’ve learned in lecture.  The Greater Green Bay YMCA is a great environment in which to apply my education!  I have made a valuable contribution to an important organization that makes a huge impact on our community, all while further developing my knowledge of labor law, human resource management, and what to expect in the professional world.  It is my hope that I have given the YMCA a fraction of what they have given me!
