During my junior year at St. Norbert, I interned at Aurora Health Care because I wanted to gain first-hand experience in public relations. This was a great opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to the field itself and to develop skills necessary for success in a professional environment.
My internship responsibilities included scanning and archiving newspaper articles, dubbing news programs, shadowing media interviews, and writing news releases and articles. The variety of work not only improved my communication and organizational skills, but has also given me a more clear idea of day-to-day life in public relations. I was also introduced to the Public Relations Society of America luncheons where I learned more about PR and had the chance to network with PR professionals.
During two semesters at Aurora, I gained a wealth of experience in internal and external communications. In addition, I learned more about marketing and special events, two areas in which I have also expressed interest. I feel grateful for each opportunity Aurora has given me because I have truly grown throughout my time there. As a result of my internship, I became a better communicator, more organized, and learned to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
My internship with Aurora’s public relations department has been worthwhile from beginning to end. I feel more prepared for the future because I gained knowledge in public relations while learning about organizational culture, dress codes, time management, and attention to detail in the process. This internship has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I encourage everyone to intern at least once throughout academic career.
