Intern Profile: Katie Thiel

While I have been a student at St. Norbert College, I have changed my major three times. Each time I decided to change it’s because I’ve directly experienced the work I would be doing and realized it’s not what I anticipated. After switching from Secondary Education to a double major in English and Communication, I knew it was imperative that I find an internship that utilized both of these degrees. I saw a job opening in the SNC News for a Public Relations Internship through Old St. Joe’s Church and I immediately gathered the necessary information and applied for the job.

This internship immediately intrigued me because I would like to pursue a career in public relations. I love creating and editing publications, communicating with others, and public speaking. I was also fascinated by the job because faith and the church has always been an important part of my life. This internship allows me to combine my faith life with my love for communicating.

My internship duties include creating and editing the weekly church bulletin, the worship aids for the Sunday masses, Common Prayer, and Generation of Faith festivals, and doing public relations work for the Parish and Campus Ministry events. My favorite and most challenging part of the internship is creating the cover for the bulletin. Even though our publisher provides already made covers for each week, I like the cover to reflect the uniqueness of our church and parish community. The covers require me to take pictures of the church and our parishioners at parish events. I then arrange these pictures in a creative manner and sometimes use a graphic design program to get the effect I desire. It’s often difficult to come up with a different cover each week. I’m always on the lookout for an artistic angle or opportunity to include on the cover. My job also requires me to be in constant contact with the Copy Center and other campus departments. Many projects come up spur of the moment and I am required to complete them. For example, I created the Generations of Faith t-shirt design for this year’s religious education program. This internship has given me a taste for what a career in the public relations field might be like.

Interning has allowed me to grow as a person because I have experienced unique opportunities. My internship has allowed me to meet and establish relationships with on-campus employees that I would not have met otherwise. Even though I am not receiving a degree in graphic design, I have always wanted to learn more about Photoshop and Illustrator and this internship allows me to work with these computer programs frequently.  My public relations internship allows me to directly use my skills. This internship has made my comfortable with my decisions and verified why I am graduating from St. Norbert College with a double major in English and Communication.
