Intern Profile: Olivia Traczyk
I interned as a staff writer for the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, which is a nonprofit organization that operates to further the Green Bay economy. As a staff writer for the Chamber, I wrote for three publications: the Friday Report (a bi-weekly newsletter for Chamber members), the Business News (a bi-weekly newspaper that the Chamber has a designated section of) and the BBJ (a bi-monthly magazine the Chamber publishes). In addition, I wrote press-releases, updated a community calendar on-line, and interviewed CEO’s, business people, etc.
This internship has really enhanced my interpersonal skills. The majority of the articles require interviewing a variety of people in the area, via e-mail, phone, or in-person. The internship has also helped to fine-tune my writing skills because of the variety of length, detail, and creativity needed for each piece. I learned how to adapt my writing to different categories of the articles (i.e. newspaper, magazine, etc). Also, I learned a lot about how an office works; it sounds obvious, but, I learned how to interact with a variety of different work styles.
This internship has helped to significantly prepare me for the future. Not only did I gain the above-mentioned skills, which are applicable for any career, but I was also able to assemble a portfolio of writing samples, which has helped me obtain another internship. I think it is hard to have an internship during the school year, so, be prepared for the extra work. In the same breath, I would definitely recommend doing an internship regardless of your major because it is such a great learning experience and it will help you decide what you really are interested in. |
