Intern Profile: Scott Werley

After spending my first two years at St. Norbert College working for Career Services as a Research Fellow, I decided to take on an internship in the Office of Communications for my junior year.  My areas of interest include photography, design, and utilizing Cascade (our college’s web content management system).  My primary responsibility involves maintaining the Office of Communication’s photo archive, a digital catalog of photographs spanning across eight academic years at this institution.  From this collection, I have constructed a new, efficient, and user-friendly library of more than thirty-two thousand electronic images documented between 2006 and spring semester of 2008.

Frequently, I am called upon as the student photographer for on-campus events and department projects.  I have worked closely and effectively with Career Services and Residential Life, covering photo projects from blog and internship photos to student living options on campus.  Additionally, I am in charge of taking staff and faculty web profile photos and uploading them onto the SNC website.  When I have the chance to design, I construct web banners and help visually solidify the progressive image of the college.

From my valuable experiences while being an intern at the Office of Communications, I have come to recognize how vital networking is to being an active photographer and how one’s attitude reflects throughout one’s work.  Also, I have learned that by staying on top of communication and planning, keeping an open mind and heart, and maintaining an optimistic attitude, I can uphold a level of professionalism in which growth is inevitable to my being.  I am proud to say that I am defined by what I do at St. Norbert College.

I firmly encourage students involved in the field of art to pursue as many freelance opportunities as possible.  These side projects signal that you are a reliable individual who is motivated to go beyond the expectations of others.  An artist is not defined by what is required of him or her, but by what he or she does outside of courses, with no strings attached.  I believe it is in one’s applied real world experiences in which one is able to discover his or her true potential.

One can find a variety of my photo work in the quarterly SNC Magazine published by the Office of Communications.  I am truly humbled in mentioning that I have had three photographs included in the 2007 Annual Student Juried Art Show and two graphic design pieces in the 2008 show, represented by twenty of the art department’s fine art and graphic design students.  I feel deeply fortunate to have photographed three Knight Theater productions since the fall of 2007, and look forward to designing for the music department during my senior year at St. Norbert.
