Intern Profile: Mason Wesenberg
The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis is one of the 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks that make up the Federal Reserve System. While the main duty of the Federal Reserve is to promote maximum employment, stable prices and moderate long-term interest rates, there are other duties that the central bank has, such as providing financial services to depository institutions as well as regulating them. Another important role that the Fed plays, as we saw during the financial crisis, is stabilizing financial systems and containing risk that may spill over into other parts of the economy.
Over the course of my two summer internship at The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, I was able to participate in the daily operations and maintenance of the Discount Window, one of the tools the Fed uses to enforce monetary policy. By having the ability to extend a line of credit to a bank in need, the Fed can prevent a bank from becoming insolvent.
Specific advice that I would give is to understand the corporation you (want to) work for. Be a sponge and take opportunities to speak with senior management. When choosing a specific firm try and understand the corporate culture it brings to the table. Also, for me specifically, I try and see how a career in a specific field would align with my "life and work" balance and how much it might cross over between the two. Ultimately, a good internship is one that offers responsibility and experience that helps in facilitating the correct career path for you further down the line.
