The Computer Information Systems program has been merged into the Computer Science program beginning with the Fall 2005. The following description and links pertain only to students entering St. Norbert College prior to the Fall 2005. Click the link to go to the Computer Science Program.
The objective of the CISS program is to integrate the theory and applications of both business and computer science. Students majoring in CISS prepare for entry-level positions as programmer-analysts, system analysts, and end user liaison, or for entry into graduate school.
The major program is consistent with the recommendations of the Association for Computing Machinery for small college CISS programs and with the Data Processing Management Association's Information Systems Program guidelines. It emphasizes oral and written communications skills by requiring thorough documentation of system projects, topical papers, a variety of team projects and several oral presentations.
The program reinforces theoretical concepts with a wide variety of hands-on experiences beginning with small programming exercises during the freshman year and culminating with a semester-long project during the senior year. Throughout the program course assignments are designed to develop analytical and problem-solving skills. Students work in both microcomputer and mainframe environments and focus on both the technical and behavioral aspects of CISS.
Students take two capstone courses (CSCI 330 and BUAD 445). Small class sizes in these courses enable the students to pursue independent team projects involving real organizations under the close supervision of a faculty member. Upon completion of these projects students are well-prepared to work on system teams in organizations.
Residency Requirements: Students majoring in CISS must earn credit in at least three upper-level (300 or above) CISS program courses at St. Norbert College. These courses must be Systems Project (BUAD 445) and two other courses selected in consultation with the CISS Committee.
Independent Study: No more than three independent studies are allowed in the 32 courses required for a CISS degree. Except in extraordinary circumstances, independent study should not be taken in place of a formalized existing course.
Internship: No more than one internship for credit is allowed in the 32 courses required for the CISS degree. This limit does not affect internships not taken for credit.
Assessment: BUAD 445 Systems Project is the senior capstone course for the CIS curriculum and is used to assess the program. All CISS students are required to take BUAD 445 at St. Norbert College.
