Communication, Media, & Theatre Requirements

Communication, Media and Theatre Major (10 courses): The major program consists of 10 courses to be distributed in the following manner:

A. Required courses: COMM 122, 124, and 125.

B. Required concentration: Four courses in one of the following concentrations (COMM 389 where appropriate), two of which must be at the 400-level (excluding COMM 490, 494):
     Communication Concentration: COMM 222, 322, 323, 324, 328, 330, 426, 427
     Media Concentration: COMM 224, 252, 343, 364, 383, 384, 467, 468
     Theatre Concentration: COMM, 053, 054, 230, 232, 333, 335, 436, 437, plus the 0.25 course ensemble activities. (Each Theatre tract student must take at least one full credit, but no more than two full credits, of ensemble activities.)

C. Elective courses: Three COMM electives, two of which must be outside the student's concentration (COMM 389 where appropriate). One of these courses outside the concentration must be at the 300-level or above.

Major in Speech Communication with Secondary Certification (10 courses): Students seeking secondary certification for teaching grades 6-12 must complete the following ten courses: COMM 122, 124, 125, 252, 322, 323, 324, 383, 426, and 427.

Minor in Speech Communication with Secondary Certification (6 courses): Students seeking a minor in secondary certification for teaching grades 6-12 must complete COMM 122, 124, 322, 324, 426, and 427.

Students seeking secondary certification in Speech Communication must formally request entry into the Teacher Education Cohort during their Freshman year.

Communication Minor (6 courses): COMM 122, 124, 125, 426, or 427, and two of the following: COMM 222, 322, 323, 324, 328, 330, (COMM 389 where appropriate).

Media Minor (6 courses): COMM 122, 124, 125, and one from 467 or 468, and two of the following: CO 224, 252, 343, 364, 383, 384 (COMM 389 where appropriate).

Theatre Minor (7 courses): COMM 122, 124, 125, and 436 or 437, and one full credit of COMM Theatre Production activities (these are 1/4 course lab courses in various aspects of theatre production), and any two theatre electives from the following: COMM 053/054, 230, 232, 333, 335 (COMM 389 where appropriate).
OR, instead of any two theatre electives
One (1) of the following "emphasis pairings."

1. Performance emphasis - COMM 232 Acting, and a voice class (2 half courses in voice in the Music Department) or COMM 333 Directing
2. Playwriting emphasis - COMM 053/ 054 (Playmaking) and one of the following: ENGL 307 (Fiction Writing), ENGL 314 (Modern Drama), ENGL 339 (Shakespeare), ENGL 425 (Advanced Creative Writing)
3. Design/Technical emphasis - COMM 232 and ART 110
4. Theatre Management emphasis - COMM 232 and BUAD 230

Any Communication, Media & Theatre major with a concentration in Communication or Media may minor in Theatre. However, a student may not use the courses needed for a theatre minor as the two (2) courses needed outside their Media or Communication concentration to fulfill the major. Any COMM major who is concentrating in Media or Communication and wishes to minor in Theatre will need four (4) additional theatre courses to complete the minor.

Any student who is not a Communication, Media, and Theatre major will adhere to the requirements for the seven (7) course minor.
