Our natural environment is a system of complex interrelationships that cannot be addressed sufficiently by a single traditional academic specialty. Yet in order to survive, humans must understand the scope of their intervention in the environment and the resultant impact of that intervention. Those charged with making environmental policy, as well as those who conduct their professional lives under these policies, must possess knowledge and skills in a wide range of disciplines.
The primary goal of the Environmental Policy program is to inform students about the roles that government and private action play in the preservation and/or degradation of the environment within the moral, philosophical, and ethical context of a Catholic liberal arts college. A major or minor in Environmental Policy is excellent preparation for careers as environmental policy analysts, environmental attorneys, government policy makers, natural resources managers, lobbyists, industrial-governmental liaisons, and grassroots organizers, or for graduate study in environmental policy, business, and law.
