History Major (10 courses): One course from History of Western Civilization I: Ancient and Medieval Europe (HIST 112) or History of Western Civilization II: Early Modern and Modern Europe (HIST 113); History of the United States (HIST 116); two courses from the following: African History (HIST 118), Middle Eastern History (HIST 120), Modern East Asia (HIST 122), and History of Latin America (HIST 130); three advanced (200 or above) courses from one area; two advanced courses from a second area; and one advanced course from a third. Advanced courses for the various areas of concentration for history majors and minors are as follows: Africa (335, 341, 342, 344, 345, 351, 352); Asia (351, 361, 362, 363, 364, 366, 368); Europe (326, 328, 329, 332, 350 351); Latin America (311, 316, 321, 333, 349); Middle East (340, 341, 343); United States (312, 314, 315, 316, 319, 335, 345, 368).
History majors, especially those planning to do graduate work, are strongly encouraged to study a foreign language.
History Minor (6 courses): Students must take either History of Western Civilization I: Ancient and Medieval Europe (HIST 112) or History of Western Civilization II: Early Modern and Modern Europe (HIST 113); History of the United States (HIST 116); two courses from the following: African History (HIST 118), Middle Eastern History (HIST 120), Modern East Asia (HIST 122), and History of Latin America (HIST 130); and any two advanced (200 or above) courses. The areas of study are Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States.
Transfer students who wish to earn a major in history must satisfy the above requirements or their equivalent and must complete, on this campus, at least three advanced courses.
Students may use CLEP examination credit to fulfill their major requirements as follows: one course credit in Western Civilization: (HIST 112 or HIST 113) and one course credit in United States History (HIST 116).
