International Studies Requirements

 

International Studies Major:
I. Core Requirements:

All core requirements must be taken at St. Norbert College.
INTL /POLI 150 Introduction to International Studies (fulfills General Education Area 3)
INTL /POLI 160 Introduction to Comparative Politics
POLI 200 Research Methodology and Techniques (Prerequisite: SSCI 224)
POLI 350 International Relations
INTL 400 World Issues and Conflict Resolution

II. Language and Area Studies:
Students choose one language and area studies emphasis from the options listed below. Students study abroad for a minimal of one semester in their language and area studies region.

European Language and Area Studies
A. HIST 113 History of Western Civilization 2 or HIST 350 Modern European History
B. POLI 365 European Governments
C. Language Competency through 204
D. FREN/GERM/SPAN 375 or civilization course in another relevant language (INTL 375).

Asian Language and Area Studies
A. 1 course from HIST 361, 362, 363, or 364
B. POLI elective in area of interest (INTL 361).
C. Language Competency through 204
D. JAPN 375 or civilization course in another relevant language (INTL 375).

African Language and Area Studies
A. HIST 118 Survey of African History
B. POLI elective in area of interest (INTL 361)
C. 2 courses focusing on Africa from HIST 335, 341, 342, 344, 345, 351, or 352.
D. 3 courses focusing upon Africa taken abroad (INTL 363), including study of an indigenous language (INTL 364).

Middle Eastern Language and Area Studies
A. HIST 120 Survey of Middle Eastern History
B. POLI elective in area of interest (INTL 361)
C. 2 courses focusing on the Middle East from HIST 340, 341, or 343.
D. 3 courses focusing upon the Middle East taken abroad (INTL 363), including (INTL 364) study of Arabic or Hebrew (Turkish, if study abroad options in Turkey arise and Farsi for study abroad in Iran).

Latin American Language and Area Studies
A. 1 course from HIST 130, 311, 333, or 349.
B. POLI 368 Politics and Governments of Latin America
C. Language Competency through 204
D. SPAN 385 or civilization course in another relevant language (INTL 375).

III. Interdisciplinary Requirements
A. ECON 101 Principles of Macroeconomics
B. RELS 340 World Religions: A Comparative Examination (fulfills Gen Ed Area 11) or RELS 350 Christianity and Cultural Diversity (Gen Ed Area 1 Upper)
C. SSCI 301 Environmental Studies (GS11) or ENVS 300 Environmental Science (GS11)
D. GEOG 140 World Regional Geography or (GEOG 225 Social Geography if scheduling necessitates)
