The overall mission of the St. Norbert College Music Department is the preparation of its students for careers in teaching, performance, and related music professions. In addition, all St. Norbert College students have an opportunity to enrich their musical understanding and sensitivity through courses in music appreciation, theory, history, and through performance in the College ensembles. Music is considered not merely a skill to be mastered, but more deeply as an expression of the feelings, values, and convictions found throughout humanity. The study, performance, and creation of music can lead to an awareness of one's own values. Students are exposed to various aspects of music history, theory, and performance with the intent of fostering a life-long understanding of music, thereby influencing their careers and avocations. Students encounter music of major time periods, religious beliefs, and cultures with the purpose of developing understanding and acceptance.
Departmental objectives include the development of listening skills, knowledge of repertoire, and musicianship, along with the development of student spirituality through aesthetic experiences in music. A systematic assessment process will feature the student portfolio, complete with critiques written by the faculty, audio and video tapes, compositions, journal entries, and student self-evaluative reflective essays.
