Sociology Requirements

Sociology Major (10 courses): Students majoring in sociology may complete a traditional academic liberal arts sociology major or, along with their sociology core, take a concentration in anthropology or the human services.  The various program options are given immediately below. 

• Sociology Concentration: The traditional liberal arts sociology major focuses on substantive social issues, theory, and research. It consists of nine sociology courses and one course in statistics. Six courses are required (SOCI 100, 111, 300, 351, 355, and SSCI 224) and four others as electives. Students are advised to take SOCI 100 and 111 as freshmen, SOCI 300 and SSCI 224 concurrently as sophomores, SOCI 351 and 355 as juniors.

• Anthropology Concentration: The sociology major with concentration in anthropology consists of nine SOCI courses plus SSCI 224.  Course requirements include SOCI 100, 111, 300, plus at least one social theory course (chosen from among SOCI 351 or 355); and at least four SOCI courses in Anthropology (from among SOCI 245, 260, 312, and 314); and one additional SOCI electives.  Students are also strongly advised to take BIOL 100 as a cognate.  Students are advised to take SOCI 100 and 111 as freshmen; BIOL 100, SSCI 224, SOCI 300 and as sophomores, and the social theory course as juniors. Students who wish to attend graduate school in anthropology are strongly urged to study a foreign language.

• Human Services Concentration: The human services concentration exists to prepare students for entry level positions in the fields of social work, social geriatrics, human relations, counseling, and corrections. Students are advised that it has become desirable and often necessary to study at the graduate level to progress in these fields. The sociology major with a concentration in human services consists of ten courses. Required courses include SOCI 100, 222, 300, 351, 355, and 494 plus SSCI 224. In addition, students must complete one course in personality or social psychology (from among SSCI 220, PSYC 212, 221, 310, 312, and 325 ), and two elective courses carrying the SOCI label.  Human Biology is recommended, as it is often required by graduate schools of social work.  Students are advised to take SOCI 100 as freshmen; SOCI 222, SSCI 224, and SOCI 300 as sophomores; SOCI 351 and 355 as juniors; and SOCI 494 as second semester seniors.

Sociology Teaching Major (11 courses): Teaching majors for secondary education certification in these fields consist of the same courses required for the sociology major or the anthropology concentration.

Sociology Academic Minor (7 courses): The academic minor consists of six courses, including SOCI 100, 300 and 351 plus three additional sociology or anthropology courses and SSCI 224.

Sociology Teaching Minor (7 courses): The teaching minor in sociology/anthropology for elementary education majors consists of six courses in sociology or anthropology including SOCI 100, 111 and 300; either SOCI 351 or 355, and two additional sociology or anthropology courses plus SSCI 224.
