Spanish Requirements

Spanish Major (8 courses above 300): Eight courses above 300 constitute a major. Spanish must include 304 (may be waived with faculty approval), 305, 310, 315 or 320, 375, 385, and 400. Foreign language majors are required to complete at least one academic semester in a country where the language they are studying is spoken. A minimum cummulative St. Norbert College GPA of 2.5 is required for study abroad although individual programs may have a higher GPA requirement.

Laboratory sessions are an integral part of beginning and intermediate language courses. Attendance is obligatory. Culture and literature courses taught in English do not fulfill major or minor requirements.

Spanish Academic Minor (4 courses above 300): Four courses above 300 constitute a minor. Spanish must include a composition course (304); one of the following literature courses (305, 310, 315 or 320); one civilization course (375 or 385); and one elective. With permission, SN 400 may count as the elective.

Spanish Teaching Minor (4 courses above 300): A teaching minor is available only to students in education. Four courses above 300 constitute a teaching minor. For Spanish these courses are SN 304, SN 305, SN 375 or SN 385, and SN 390 (taken during the immersion experience). In addition, all students seeking certification to teach a foreign language must complete an intensive language immersion experience in an educational setting of at least 6-8 weeks in duration in a country where the target language is regularly spoken. Examples of acceptable immersion experiences include semester or summer programs sponsored by AIFS, CIEE, or approved by Laval University in Quebec.

Advanced Placement: Students who have had a foreign language and who plan to continue language study beyond 101 are required to take the College's placement exam during orientation for incoming students. Students who wish to continue language study and/or fulfill their GS7 Foreign Heritage requirement will be placed according to their score on the College's placement test into the appropriate level (101, 102, 203, 204, or 305). Incoming students who have taken the CLEP exam may earn credit for up to two courses in their language (101 and 102).

Retroactive Credit Policy: Students will be awarded up to two course credits for previous language study if they place into and pass a language course with a B or better. Students must claim retroactive credits during their first semester of language study at St. Norbert College.
