Summer Research Program
The 10-week chemistry summer research program begins with an application process in the Spring. All students interested in participating in the program are invited to attend a short seminar where the chemistry faculty present their current research projects. Students are asked to fill out an application form allowing them to discuss how this experience will help them with their future career goals and then they are interviewed by the chemistry faculty. A synopsis of the current faculty projects are summarized below:
Dr. Jon Russel: Dr. Russel's research interests are in the development of organic chemical methodology and the application of organic synthesis to the investigation of biological problems.
Dr. David Poister: Dr. Poister's area of specialization is environmental chemistry with a particular interest in the biogeochemistry and chemical ecology of aquatic systems. He is currently investigating chemical and physical conditions that influence the colony size of Aulacoseira, a planktonic diatom.
Dr. Kari Cunningham: Dr. Cunningham's research agenda involves ligand modification of photochemically active complexes. She is currently interesting in copper(I) phenanthrolines.
Dr. Cyndi Ochsner: Students working in Dr. Ochsner's lab learn biochemical and electrochemical methods to study neuronal transporters. One project is to determine how Modafinil, an FDA approved drug to treat excessive sleepiness, interacts with the human dopamine transporter.
Dr. Larry Scheich: Dr. Scheich's current research is focused on incorporation of clays into polymer systems for applications as nanocomposites. The current studies also investigates incorporation of compounds that may lend antibacterial properties to the clays and their composites.
