"God in the Poetic Imagination: Crossing Boundaries"
Date: Oct. 26, 2006
Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Location: Fort Howard Theater, Bemis International Center

Dr. Edward L. Risden

Bishop Robert Morneau

Dr. Laurie Mac Diarmid

The Reformation of the sixteenth century and many subsequent religious movements have left a legacy of deep ecclesial divisions among the English-speaking peoples. Yet despite these very real theological and cultural divides, the medium of poetry has continuously provided a way for poets and their readers to reflect on God and spiritual experience in ways that often transcend these historic differences. The three papers will address this important phenomenon and its implications for poetic and religious discourse.

  • "Ecumenism and Renaissance Copia: Poets, Affiliations and the Pious Imagination" - Dr. Edward L. Risden, Department of English, St. Norbert College
  • "Metaphors of the Deity: A Case for Distortion" - Bishop Robert Morneau, Pastor of Resurrection Parish, Auxiliary Bishop of Green Bay
  • "T.S. Eliot, Ash Wednesday and the Female Divine" - Dr. Laurie Mac Diarmid, Department of English, St. Norbert College
