One of the first—and still one of the most influential—Christian writings on how to interpret the Bible is Augustine’s On Christian Teaching (de doctrina christiana).  What is necessary for a person to know before attempting to read the Bible?  How important a role do the original languages of the Bible play in its proper interpretation?  What criteria are essential in distinguishing between correct and incorrect readings?  This lecture will explore Augustine’s insights into biblical interpretation and their continued relevance for contemporary Catholic understandings of the nature and role of Sacred Scripture.
