Fr. Andrew Ciferni
Fr. Andrew Ciferni, O.Praem.
Director, Center for Norbertine Studies
St. Norbert College

This presentation was written for and first delivered at a symposium on Spirituality in Contemporary Art on October 18, 2011 (the Feast of St. Luke, patron of artists) celebrated in Florence, Italy. Fr. Andrew Ciferni's presentation will propose that the acquisition of art by religious communities almost infallibly is an expression of the charism of the religious community. This is especially the case when the art is commissioned by the community and is in dialogue with the artist. Fr. Ciferni's examples will draw from a 12th century Norbertine Bible, a fresco attributed to Fra Angelico in the Dominican priory of San Marco in Florence, a work commissioned by Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, PA, and an illumination from the Collegeville Bible.
