McNair Scholars 2012-2013
Crystal Skenandore
Psychology Major, Spanish Minor
I am from the Oneida
Reservation near De Pere, Wisconsin, where I live with my parents, grandmother,
and aunt. As a young Oneida woman, I feel the need to
serve my community. At this time, this
means furthering my education as much as I can, as well as working with Oneida
youth in an internship at Oneida Children and Family Services. Activities in the St. Norbert community
include being the treasurer for the student organization, La Alianza, as well
as being an active member of the Interdenominational Christian organization on
campus, Cru.
My research project
for the McNair Scholars Program entails a meta-analysis of the psychological
implications of Diabetes on the brain.
Coming from a tribe which has a high Diabetes rate, this researchtopic
is important to my family, my community, and me. While there are many areas of research for
Diabetes, I am interested in the effects that Diabetes has on the emotional and
psychological stability of the individuals who are diagnosed with the
disease.
I intend to study
Clinical Psychology in graduate school, in hopes of eventually earning a
Doctoral degree in Psychology. The
McNair Scholars Program will help me achieve my goals by providing the research
opportunities that I might not have otherwise had access to. Also, the McNair Scholars Program will
provide me with the much-needed support and guidance on my journey in higher
education.
