Tara Lovdahl
English with Creative Writing Emphasis & Art Major
I
have always taken pride in succeeding as a student and being an active member
of my school and community. As a St. Norbert student, I have completed over 400
hours of community service and have had multiple leadership experiences, such
as being an First Year Experience mentor and a T.R.I.P.S leader. Aside from the
strong emphasis on volunteering, my favorite aspect of St. Norbert is the
opportunity to get to know professors better than one would at a larger
college. I also keep busy with two on-campus jobs and enjoy performing in the
Comedy City troupe at the Sports Corner in De Pere.
As
an English major, I have a firm belief that when one reads literature, one
reads about life. Relatedly, the
author’s perspective is always informed by society and personal experience.
Aside from my primary majors, I am interested in Women and Gender studies. My project
will focus on the field of women in work, particularly working-class women’s
literature. It seems to be a field where some research has been done, but much
more could still be discovered. Some authors I am considering are Tillie Olson,
Judy Grahn, Deborah Garrison, and Dorothy Allison. My McNair mentor on this
project is Karlyn Crowley, Associate Professor of English and Director of
Women’s and Gender Studies.
