Epiphany

A message from the college president

My friends at @St. Norbert remind me that this message comes to you today, the feast of the Epiphany. As the gospels relate, the birth of a child to poor, wandering parents in Bethlehem could scarcely have been a more humble event. But with the arrival of the Magi, the event we commemorate every Jan. 6, the true joy of this news began to be spread to a waiting, wider world.

Well, I’m no wise man – a fact I’m reminded of on a daily basis! – but we’ve been spreading some glad tidings ourselves here at St. Norbert College, and we fully expect that momentum to continue throughout this admittedly challenging new year. The star that appeared in the east showed the way for the Magi when the time was right, and now is the time to share further afield the light that burns bright here at St. Norbert.

The recent gift of $4 million from Don and Pat Schneider brings much closer to reality a badly needed new stadium and athletics complex. The Mulva Library is rising smartly and will open this year, right on time to welcome the incoming class of 2013. Many of those same students will spend at least part of their St. Norbert careers in the wonderful all-suite residence hall just down Third Street from the library. Renovation of the old Todd Wehr Library will begin soon, and in the meantime we’ve got our sights set on a new science building.

All this activity is central to St. Norbert’s commitment to be a Catholic liberal arts institution of the first rank, thus fulfilling Abbot Pennings’ abiding ambition for us. And as we work with our friends, alumni and supporters to bring these and other campus priorities to fruition, we are again reminded of how fortunate we are.

So amid the excitement, let us step back for a moment to reflect on our blessings, past and present. The power of hope was one of Christ’s enduring messages, and our hope for you is that 2009 will bring you and your loved ones prosperity, peace, and maybe even a little peace of mind.

See you around campus!
