The outdoor concert series has introduced many new acts to the area, and established some regular favorites among its audience.
Music fills the air all summer
From the banks of the Fox River to the Pennings Hall of Fine Arts, there’ll be music everywhere you turn on campus this June, July and August. Live performances and a music reunion make summer a lively time to visit the college.
Knights on the Fox
This summer marks Knights on the Fox’s 10th anniversary season. To celebrate, the St. Norbert College Community Band will play a series of American standards at the July 31 concert. The community band, directed by Michael Knight (Music), performed at the very first Knights on the Fox concert.
New to Knights on the Fox this year, cover band RPM will kick off the concert series on July 10 with hits past and present. Many alum-led crowd favorites return, including the Jenny Thiel Group with vocal jazz, Kevin Van Ess and the Talk of the Town with Dixieland and swing, and Let Me Be Frank Productions with sketch song and dance. Concerts are held Tuesday nights from July 10 to Aug. 7. Picnicking begins at 5 p.m., and concerts run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Music Theatre’s 51st season will help you cool off this summer with musicals set in an island paradise and the Austrian Alps. “South Pacific,” which portrays two parallel love stories threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war, will run from June 13 to 27. “The Sound of Music” follows a month later, from July 18 to 29, with its account of a spirited woman dispatched from Nonnberg Convent, at which she is a young postulant, to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain.
A 1960s music alum reunion
Jean Klas ’64 and Joyce Calderon ’65 collaborated with Todd Danen ’77 (Alumni and Parent Relations) to reunite music majors, minors, ensemble members and their friends at an alumni event set for June 22-23. Participants will tour the campus, take part in Mass and attend both a dinner in their honor and a showing of Music Theatre’s “South Pacific.”
Summer Band Camp
From June 11-15, Michael Knight, Linda Cook and Eric High (Music) will conduct the 31st annual summer band camp. The camp brings students who have completed grades 5 through 9 to campus for a week to rehearse in one of two ensembles. Attendees will also take part in master classes in jazz, conducting, basic music theory, practice skills and chamber music. At the end of the week, students will showcase their newly learned skills at the Summer Music Academy Concert, held at 7:30 p.m. on June 15 in the Hall of Fine Arts’ Walter Theatre.
