Rick Nahmias’ photography on show at the Baer Gallery

The work of photographer, writer and filmmaker Rick Nahmias has been presented on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and appears in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Soon, it will also be on show at St. Norbert.

Nahmias’ exhibit, “Golden States of Grace: Prayers of the Disinherited,” opens in the Bush Art Center’s Baer Gallery on Sept. 27. The photographic, text and audio project documents 11 marginalized communities at prayer, highlighting the spirituality of groups that range from Jewish addicts merging Torah study with the Twelve Steps, to a Muslim community in Santa Ana, Calif., whose members survived the Cambodian genocide.

The free exhibition, sponsored by the Peace and Justice Center and the Division of Mission and Heritage, will be open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Oct. 22.

Nahmias, who has been awarded a U.S. Congressional Citation and was honored at the Sundance Film Festival, will visit the college on Oct. 5 to deliver this semester's Norman and Louis Miller Lecture in Public Understanding.

His talk, entitled “Diversity, Community and the Margins of American Society,” is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Fort Howard Theater. A reception, gallery talk and book signing at the Bush Art Center will follow.
