Only four more days to VOTE for JIM

Green Knight football fans have come out strong in favor of their man. Since @St. Norbert endorsed Coach Jim Purtill in its November issue, reader votes and others have kept him a front-runner in the race for 2008 Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year.

At press time, Purtill was maintaining his hold among the top three. With only four more days of open voting left, your help can keep him in contention for the final phase of the competition. Coaches who finish among the top 25 vote-getters in their division Dec. 6 will be selected for scoring against a College Football Hall of Fame-approved model.

The award brings with it $70,000 split between the winning coach’s school and chosen charitable foundation.

Fans can vote once a day through Dec. 6, so repeat votes are encouraged. And, if you have the chance to add a positive comment as you vote, it may help Purtill's chances as he goes forward.

Since the Campaign for Jim was launched in the November issue of @St. Norbert, supporters have chimed in on the award web site with comments like these:

“He exemplifies the qualities of a great Division III coach. He is a great coach but he also makes his players into great men.”

“Coach Purtill is a teacher first, and has had winning seasons since he arrived at SNC. He really motivates the players, and welcomes anyone who wants to play.”

“The man does not rest. He strives to make the players on the team work hard on the field and in the classroom. Jim Purtill is a very well-respected gentleman.”

“Has priorities straight. Family, faith, academics, THEN football. Many of his former players are now currently coaching in college and high school. Lifetime dedicated to the game. Does a great job with limited resources. All he does is produce.”

“He does an amazing job working with the students to help them understand leadership both on the field and off.”

 “Outstanding record. Gentleman.”

For specifics on Purtill’s career, take a quick glance at www.snc.edu/athletics. Here, just a few more reasons why we think he deserves your vote:
  • Purtill, along with former Green Bay East head coach John Kolstad ’75, will be inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the spring of 2009.
  • Purtill is 91-16 in his 10 seasons at St. Norbert.
  • The Green Knights have won eight Midwest Conference championships under Purtill’s watch and have appeared in seven NCAA Division III playoffs.
  • Purtill’s teams have rewritten substantial amounts of Midwest Conference football history. The Green Knights own a staggering 84-5 mark in Midwest Conference games under Purtill, and an even more impressive 42-2 in league road games.
  • St. Norbert fashioned a league record 26-game conference winning streak to start his coaching term. The Green Knights’ six straight Midwest Conference championships from 1999 to 2004 is the longest streak of dominance in the 86-year gridiron history of the league.
