A fond farewell marks the passing of the littlest Green Knight of all

More than 100 students, faculty and staff gathered outside the Townhouses for a Nov. 10 funeral service honoring a favorite campus critter.

“Snowy,” an albino squirrel who made his home on the Baer Mall this year, was a campus celebrity. His demise even drew the attention of the local media: the Green Bay Press-Gazette covered the service. College president Tom Kunkel was also in attendance.

“He was a source of enjoyment and cheerfulness to everyone who visited our campus,” says Michael Poradek ’12.

Poradek and several friends organized the grassroots memorial service for Snowy after discovering he had been hit by a vehicle on Third Street.

Well aware that the squirrel was, well, a squirrel, the student organizers still saw value in this opportunity to draw the community together at a reverent but light-hearted ceremony.

More than a dozen students participated in the memorial service as pallbearers, eulogists, musicians and speakers.

The program included a prelude performance, titled “How Grey Thou Aren’t,” by Michael Rosewall (Music), a eulogy given by Student Government Association president Peter Romenesko ’10 and organ accompaniment by Emily Belinski ’12.

The ceremony also included a performance of Michael Jackson’s tune “Black or White” by musicians Justin Wrzesinski ’10 and Kevin Gonring ’13.

“It’s nice when we can all take a break and spend some time from the hustle and bustle of college life. This is truly something that we’ll remember for a long time to come,” says Poradek.

Readers of the St. Norbert College Magazine met the albino squirrel in the pages of their Fall 2009 issue. Snowy met his sad end while that issue was at the printer.
