Groups and Workshops

Groups

Support and therapy groups are formed around a variety of personal and social issues. The groups are designed to give students a safe place to explore various aspects of their lives. For many students, these groups are their first opportunity to discuss the situations and feelings they have experienced. Students frequently gain new understandings of themselves through talking with other students who share similar experiences. Participating in groups often helps counteract the sense of isolation people may feel. Most groups meet weekly for six to eight weeks, and all groups are strictly confidential.

If you are interested in any of the following groups, please contact the Counseling Center to get more information or to sign up. You will have a chance to ask questions about the group to see if it meets your expectations, and to discuss a convenient meeting time. A group will be started if enough students have committed to attend a group regularly—the minimum number of group participants is five. The Counseling Center offers groups on the following topics:

  • Adult children of alcoholics
  • Adult children of divorce or separation
  • Coping with depression
  • Eating issues
  • Freshman perspective: transitioning to college
  • Grief and loss
  • Self-esteem
  • Stress management
  • Survivors of sexual assault or child sexual abuse
  • Other groups as requested

Workshops

Workshops are similar to ongoing groups in that they focus on a specific topic and discussions emerge from students' requests. The programs listed are examples of what is available, but students may inquire about other topics of interest. The Counseling Center staff has experience in a wide variety of issues and our goals are to promote awareness, wellness and personal growth. We are willing to provide workshops in the residence halls as requested. Examples of some of the programs we offer are listed below:
