| Edward Killeen (1897-1971), though he had long cherished the hope of becoming a priest, interrupted his studies in order to supplement the family income. He learned the difficulties that the unorganized farmers and laboring men of that time were force to bear in order to eke out a livelihood. These experiences were to stand him in good stead when he elected the fields of economics and industrial labor relations as his areas of concentration at the University of Wisconsin.
As a member of the Order of Saint Norbert in 1930 following ordination, the department of economics conferred on him the master’s degree in 1936 and in 1942 the degree of doctor of philosophy. The St. Norbert College yearbook of 1960, dedicated to Father Killeen, stated:
"He began teaching at St. Norbert in 1941. Since then, as priest, educator, adviser and friend, Father Killeen has been an inspiring leader to the students. His many and varied accomplishments, his generosity, his humor and his kindness have earned our respect and admiration….Guided by Christian principles and a true sense of fairness to all with whom he works, he has dedicated his life to God and his fellow man."
The award is based on academic excellence in economics and participation in scholarly activities in economics and allied disciplines. |
