What can I do with a degree in economics? Economics majors are well-suited for any number of careers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics annual publication, the Occupational Outlook Handbook, outlines the job market for economics, and details the types of positions and responsibilities economics majors can expect when they enter the work force. Starting salaries for economics majors are quite high. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reported an average of $45,191, behind chemical/electrical engineering and accounting, but well ahead of business administration and marketing.
For additional salary data, see the Occupational Employment Statistics general data or economics-specific data. Note that these are not starting salary numbers. For those who may be interested in a higher degree, recent research suggests that economics majors perform quite well on the LSAT, due to the analytical and communication skills that you acquire in economics. In fact, economist Michael Nieswiadomy finds that economics majors perform the best among all other majors. Additionally, the better MBA programs may give preference for admission to students with backgrounds that have more technical backgrounds (such as engineering, physics, math and of course economics). We take great pride in maintaining contact with our alumni and creating a lifelong mentoring relationship. This creates great networking opportunities as you proceed along your chosen path. - |
