Human relations program
Candidates for certification to teach will acquire human relations skills to reduce provincialism and prejudice, understand the need for an open, honest and trusting posture in interpersonal relationships and develop an ability to write, speak and listen with sensitivity to the feelings and needs of others. This goal is consonant with the Christian values to which the collegial community at St. Norbert College commits itself.
As a teacher, you relate with many persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities, attitudes and beliefs. Through the human relations program of teacher education, you will study particular courses and engage in field activities which should help you develop better human relations skills.
The human relations program must be completed by every student at St. Norbert College who seeks certification as a teacher. Each prospective teacher must spend 50 hours interacting with representatives of three target populations (U.S. minorities, low SES and physically/cognitively challenged). Twenty-five of these hours (Part A) are to be spent with minority leaders or advocates (seminars, conventions, speakers) and the other 25 hours (Part B) are to be spent in direct face-to-face experiences.
At the end of the pre-professional block, you must have completed and documented for your file 8 hours each for Part A and Part B toward completion of this requirement. Opportunities to participate in human relations activities appear on the education listserv. These opportunities are also posted on the education bulletin board located inside the faculty office area of the second floor of Boyle Hall. |
