Overseas student teaching

The overseas student teaching program provides students enrolled in the St. Norbert teacher education program a unique opportunity to learn about a different educational system in a foreign country by completing half of their required practice teaching in a carefully selected overseas school. The Office of Overseas Student Teaching works collaboratively with an English-speaking foreign school system to arrange teaching assignments, in pre-kindergarten through secondary school settings.

The director helps to identify appropriate placements for interested students who are completing their professional preparation in elementary or secondary education. Each student who qualifies for participation in the program is assigned to work alongside an overseas teacher. Please note that because of the competitive nature of our program, we can not guarantee placements for all students applying to student teach abroad. The foreign teachers selected are interested in helping future teachers continue to develop their teaching skills during an 8-10 week stay in a host school.

It is essential that student teachers choosing to teach in a foreign country develop a set of personal and professional goals. These goals will serve as a basis for self assessment by the student teacher. The list of goals should be evaluated and revised throughout the student teaching experience. These self-selected goals will also provide rubrics for evaluation of the student teacher by the cooperation teacher and the college supervisor. The usual assessment forms will also be used as an evaluation of the student teaching experience.

An overseas student teaching experience offers many unique opportunities for professional development. Living in a foreign country challenges the student teacher to learn about the culture and customs of their host country. Students discover within themselves the ability to develop the skills needed to live, learn and teach in a culturally diverse environment.
