Welcome to First Year Initiatives
As the Director of First Year Initiatives, it is my responsibility to ensure that freshman experiences at St. Norbert College are positive and favorable. With this in mind, we have enacted several initiatives to aid first-year students with their personal and academic success.
First Year Initiatives also gathers information on freshmen retention so that I can help faculty and staff develop strategies for working with first-year students.
I have had the opportunity to collaborate with other units across campus and we are always excited when our efforts are reflected in the first-year retention statistics of the college.
Please contact me by
e-mail or (920) 403-3234 for issues relating to retention and the freshman experience, and for additional information on the initiatives listed below.
Jeff Ritter
Director of First Year Initiatives
First Year Initiatives has as its goal the success, persistence and retention of freshmen students at St. Norbert College. To this end, the following are events, initiatives and strategies in which this office collaborates:
- Assists with the planning of the
First Year Experience program, explores the opportunities for specific orientation of transfer and diverse students and evaluates the need for added academic components during “Welcome Week.”
- Utilizes the Power Alert System and collected data to assess appropriate retention actions and develop future plans.
- Provides first-year faculty advisors with information and training on retention and the freshman experience.
- Develops and communicates the
College Retention Working Plan.
- Facilitates the “30-Minute Group,” working with the
Early Warning System.
- Incorporates intervention strategies for students who receive poor midterm grades into long-term student success strategies and consults with students, parents and referrals to determine appropriate assistance.
- Collaborates with the Director of Residential Education and Housing to explore the living experience as it relates to issues such as temporary housing, grouping of honor students and expectations of the treatment of others.
- Gathers current research and information to enhance the first-year experience and provides an annual evaluation of the effectiveness of freshman retention strategies to faculty and staff.
