Derek Elkins

Protestant Chaplain

B.A. Philosophy, University of North Carolina-Greensboro
M.A. Christian Education, Union Presbyterian Seminary
M.A. Theology, The Theological School at Drew University

Derek Elkins joined the SNC community during the Fall 2015 semester to support the spirituality of students from Protestant Christian denominations. He enjoys walking with students into a faith that celebrates mystery, pauses for contemplation, hungers for connection, and lives through compassion. Derek has worked in higher education since 2008 and served as a minister for youth and college students before then. At SNC, Derek co-leads a monthly worship service called Thin Place with students from a variety of Protestant traditions, coordinates opportunities for conversation and reflection in the Adulting! program, journeys with students discerning their vocations through the Navigate program, and brings public art on campus to enrich the liturgical year. Derek also co-leads the TRIPS program, equipping students for weeks of service that root justice and compassion deeply in students' learning and lives.
