Internship for credit

ENGL 494 Internship in Humanities and Fine Arts
This internship experience allows students to apply their studies in a supervised work situation. Students benefit from an inside look at different kinds of organizations, by having a chance to work in their field of study, and by gaining experience with state-of-the-art equipment and practices. Junior or senior standing and consent are requirements.

The course is conducted online as most students who take this course intern outside the Green Bay area. Students interested in pursuing this opportunity must have the internship approved, preferably by someone in your discipline and the instructor. In addition to the internship being an authentic educational experience (and not just grunt work), students must:
  • Intern in a work environment that is not supervised or owned by a family member
  • Work in an environment in which the employer considers the student an "intern" and not just an employee. This is because students must be allowed to ask questions and conduct interviews (for assignments) in the work environment, both practices that might not be allowed of regular employees. In addition, the intern should receive some mentoring and regular guidance and supervision.
  • Work at least 120 hours over the course of eight weeks.
  • Complete five writing assignments.
  • Meet with faculty member prior to their departure for the summer.
In addition, students are allowed to receive payment or a stipend for their work if it is offered.

Given the varied majors of students in the course, the course content addresses a wide variety of topics and issues as they relate to the internship experience. For instance, students are asked to write a paper about ethics in their internship work environment. Most students are surprised to learn about the ethical dilemmas that often face employees and the ethical guidelines (or lack thereof) that an organization might have in place to guide their decision making and their work. They also do papers on diversity and communication in the workplace, and organizational culture and climate. -
